After a quiet day around Lahaina, we were itching to get out and see more of Maui… well, lucky for us there’s a whole (huge!) eastern lobe of the island, with plenty to see!
If you look up the road to Hāna, you’ll see plenty of warning signs. Yep, it’s twisty (over 600 curves!), hilly, narrow and with 40+ one-lane bridges. It’s a fantastic drive – we couldn’t recommend it more!
Full disclosure: we didn’t make it all the way to Hāna, but we did see quite a lot on the part we did. At Ho’okipa lookout we saw a few people checking out the surf; further along, a bamboo forest and, to my astonishment, rainbow eucalyptus trees! I thought they’d be much harder to spot!
Tip four: If you see a bunch of vehicles parked on the side of the road, it’s worth stopping to see what’s there! That’s how we found the bamboo forest (and stopped long enough to notice the rainbow eucalypts.)
We had big plans for the rest of the day, so we hot-footed it to Polli’s Mexican in Makawao – the best Mexican food on Maui (as voted by L and his family), and found ourselves slowly winding our way up the slopes of Haleakalā. But more about that in my next post.
