Waterfalls, curios and waterfalls: South Island road trip Part Six
By the time we got to Milford Sound, we’d realised we only had around a week left before we had to be in Picton. So it ended up being rather a quick trip through Fiordland, Southland and then back to Otago – but man, did we manage to fit in a lot of scenery amongst the driving!
We had an early start before our Milford Sound trip
I’d always assumed that Mitre Peak was further out – you can see it from the road!
We were lucky, a few days earlier and the waterfalls were dry. Apparently 12 days without rain is a drought here
As the falls reach the sea, they just become a fine haze
That crack in the rock? An earthquake fault.

It’s quite big!
After leaving Milford Sound, we went straight to Invercargill and Bluff
And the next day, straight off to the Catlins
The road hugs the south-eastern coast of the South Island
And finally, we made it to the REAL lands’ end. (Hint: it’s not Bluff!)
Believe it or not, this is a fossilised forest from the Jurassic period
And the petrified forest is now home to these yellow eyed penguins
