Routeburn day 2

It’s always tough picking favourites, and choosing between day 1 or day 2 of the Routeburn is no different.

Our destination today was the Routeburn Falls hut. To get there, we slowly wound back and forth, up the mountain and above the tree line. The Harris saddle was the literal high point, but the real high points were walking in the mist, hearing kea overhead, and sharing a whisky on a massive rock with a new trail pal.

Most people make apologetic faces when we tell them that we had rain on day 2. Sure, we didn’t go up to Conical hill, but we did get the very best view of Lake Harris in the rain. Starting in the cloud and seeing the valley open out in front of you is something I’m not likely to forget.
