Our walking holiday starts. After three solid days in the car or on the ferry, it felt great to put the backpack on and start walking. Destination: Lake Mackenzie hut
The forecast was for rain, but as you can see from the pictures, we didn’t see a lot – remarkable for Fiordland National Park! Along the walk we could hear ngirungiru and pīwakawaka flitting about in the trees.
The first stretch of the walk saw us take a wee side-quest up to Key Summit. Definitely worth the wee extra effort! The photos will never be able to show the scale of the valley you find yourself in, with snow-capped mountains in every direction.
We decided to wait til Earland falls for lunch. Just as we got there, it had started to get cooler, so it was a brisk lunch in the spray of a huge waterfall, and then pressing on through the lush bush to the hut.
