Three days in to our South Island road trip and so far we’ve done a bit of bird watching, made friends with the wildlife and been on a four hour walk through the bush. And already we’ve been rained out and forced to find accommodation at a moment’s notice!
Our holiday stated with the ferry trip south.
Looking out towards Queen Charlotte Sound
Pelorus river is a popular swimming spot
About 35 km of the road to French pass is like this. Our car will never be the same again!
You get the sense they see some strong winds around here
They don’t really do fences at Anaru Station
Welcome to French Pass. One shop, about 5 houses and a school!
Possibly the friendliest weka ever. Within seconds he was wandering towards the car.
We found a small beach completely hidden from the road
At dinner time the weka returned and eventually let us hand feed him
And then he came back again for breakfast
We said goodbye to our new best buddy. On to Nelson!
After Friday’s rain, we ventured out in Nelson on Saturday.
They have a big farmers market
But we were keen to go for a walk
So we decided to see how far along the Abel Tasman coast track we could get in two hours
We saw lots of small creeks
… and a tree growing out of a rock in Tinline Bay!
Before making it to Apple Tree Bay.
On our way back we saw a mummy and daddy with their two new chicks. Anyone know what kind of bird this is?
